Tidio alternative for small businesses: stay, switch to another tool or build your own

By Marco Mori · Published 2026-10-19 · Updated 2026-10-19

The best Tidio alternative for a small business depends on why you want to leave. If the bill is the problem, Crisp charges a flat rate per workspace. If you need a team inbox, tickets and WhatsApp or Instagram, another SaaS helpdesk fits better than anything custom. If your inquiries need your own rules, such as what the assistant must ask, what it must never promise and how a lead reaches you, a custom website assistant fits better. If you only want answers from your own content, Tidio's free plan may already be enough, so staying is a valid answer. The picker below maps six common reasons to a recommendation.

Why are you leaving Tidio?

Pick the reason that is closest to yours. The result runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. It is a rule of thumb from how I scope these projects, and two of the six answers end with "stay" or "use another SaaS tool".

How much does Tidio cost in 2026?

On tidio.com/pricing, checked on 2026-10-19, Tidio lists a free plan, Starter at $24.17 per month with 100 billable conversations, Growth from $49.17 per month with 250 or more, and Plus from $300 per month plus usage. Its Lyro AI agent can also be bought on its own from $32.50 per month for 50 AI conversations. The page has a monthly and an annual switch, so confirm which price you are looking at before you compare. Everything above the free plan is a subscription that grows with conversation volume.

Can I use Tidio for free?

Yes. The same pricing page lists a free plan with 50 billable conversations per month. It also says the first 50 conversations with Lyro, the AI agent, are free for life, and the first 100 visitors reached with Flows are free. For a one-person business with modest traffic that can be all you ever need. If you are leaving Tidio only because you assume it gets expensive, check your real conversation count first.

What does Tidio do well?

Tidio combines live chat, ticketing, no-code Flows and the Lyro AI agent in one self-serve product. Paid plans start with a 7-day free trial, and the pricing table lists WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and email integrations. Tidio states that Lyro works only with the content and guidance you provide, and that its customers average a 75% resolution rate. Both are the vendor's own claims, not something I have measured. It even offers a tailored AI agent built with its team. If you want to be live this week and handle chats yourself, a custom build does not beat that.

A custom assistant loses on four of these seven rows: start speed, free entry, team inbox and channels. It wins on fit and on having one person responsible. When does a custom website assistant beat Tidio?

A custom assistant beats a platform when the hard part is handling an inquiry, not answering a question. It asks a guesthouse visitor for dates and group size before passing the request on, it never quotes a price, or it sends emergencies to a phone number first. Those rules live in code and prompts built around your business instead of settings in a generic product. The trade-off is time and a project fee instead of a subscription, and you give up the shared inbox and the extra channels. I only recommend it when the picker above points that way. For the difference between an assistant and an agent that takes actions, read custom AI agents and chatbots.

What does my own assistant do today?

The chat on this site is one I built and run. It answers questions about my services, says plainly when it cannot help, and lets a visitor leave a name, industry and phone number or e-mail. Those details and the chat go to me only after the visitor agrees, and I reply personally, usually within a day. It carries the note that replies may contain mistakes. It is a small system on purpose. How I work is described under AI automation services.

How do I know switching is worth it?

Count the inquiries you lose when nobody answers in time. The missed inquiries calculator uses your own traffic and job value and shows the monthly figure. If that figure is small, staying on Tidio's free plan or using no assistant at all is the honest answer. If it is clearly above the cost of a project, scoping a custom build is reasonable. If you want ongoing capacity rather than one project, see hire an AI developer part-time.

Questions people ask

What is a good Tidio alternative for a small business?

It depends on why you want to leave. Crisp is the closest tool if you want a flat rate per workspace and a shared inbox. A custom website assistant is the alternative worth scoping if your inquiries need your own intake rules. If you only want answers from your own content, Tidio's free plan may already be enough.

Can I use Tidio for free?

Yes. According to Tidio's pricing page there is a free plan with 50 billable conversations per month, and the first 50 conversations with its Lyro AI agent are free for life. Paid plans add more conversations, analytics and team features.

Is there a cheaper Tidio alternative?

Not necessarily. On the entry prices listed on 2026-10-19, Tidio Starter at $24.17 per month is below Crisp Mini at $45 per workspace. Both also offer a free plan. A custom build has a project fee instead of a subscription, so it only pays off when you need the rules, not for price alone.

Does a custom website assistant need WhatsApp?

No. For small businesses I build the assistant on the website itself, which needs no phone-number setup, no template approvals and no extra provider account. If you need WhatsApp or Instagram in one inbox, a SaaS tool such as Tidio or Crisp is the better fit.

Can a custom assistant make mistakes?

Yes, like any AI assistant. That is why it should answer from your content, say when it does not know and hand the visitor to a person with contact details. The assistant on this site carries the note 'AI assistant, replies may contain mistakes.'

What does a custom website assistant cost?

Pricing is project-based and quoted by email after a short scoping conversation. There is no public price list, because the scope decides the price.
